In a match filled with momentum swings and dramatic goals, Laramie County Community College emerged victorious over Gillette College, 4-3, in a high-octane women's soccer showdown on Saturday.
The game began with Gillette asserting early dominance, controlling possession and pressing high. Their efforts paid off in the 24th minute when Amber Ogbolu broke through LCCC's defensive line, shifted the ball to her right foot, and fired a shot past goalkeeper Jenna Feldmann at the near post to give Gillette a 1-0 lead.
LCCC responded swiftly. Just six minutes later, a cleared free kick from Gillette landed at the feet of Avery Anderson, who struck a shot from 25 yards out that soared over goalkeeper Addy Harris, leveling the score at 1-1.
Gillette quickly regained the lead in the 33rd minute when a miscleared corner kick bounced dangerously on the goal line and was tapped in by Lexi Wells, making it 2-1.
Refusing to back down, LCCC found their equalizer before halftime. Anderson threaded a precise through ball between two defenders to Emily Sheather, who was brought down by Harris in a one-on-one situation, earning a penalty. Defender Ekena Little calmly converted from the spot, sending both teams into the break tied at 2-2.
LCCC came out firing in the second half, applying relentless pressure on Gillette's back line. In the 62nd minute, A. Anderson once again made her mark, finishing a well-placed cross from Cami Paskett, putting LCCC ahead 3-2.
Gillette refused to go quietly. In the 86th minute, Ogbolu unleashed a long-range effort that deflected off Feldmann and fell to Wells, who netted her second goal of the day to tie the match at 3-3.
But the final word belonged to A. Anderson. Just moments later, she pressed Gillette's outside back, won the ball, and saw her initial shot blocked. The rebound popped into the air, and Anderson struck a right-footed volley that rifled into the far post netting, completing her hat trick and sealing the 4-3 win for LCCC.
LCCC outshot Gillette 16-8, with A. Anderson leading the charge with six shots. Feldmann recorded three saves for LCCC, while Harris tallied six for Gillette.
