Golden Eagles finish home schedule with second straight win

CHEYENNE, WY - The Laramie Counnty Community College Golden Eagles (12-14) finished off the home portion of the 2021 schedule with a 3-1 win over Casper (13-16) on Saturday afternoon. 

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 17-10 lead in the first set before Casper put together a run to cut the LCCC lead. Casper started to climb back into the set before the Golden Eagles were able to close the first set out, winning 25-19. 

After falling behind 6-4, the Golden Eagles went on to score the next 10 points with the help of kills from Michela De Stefano (Rome, Italy) and Kalme Moncavo (Rio De Janiero, Brazil), to take a 14-6 lead in the second set. The Golden Eagles went on to win the second set 25-17 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. 

De Stefano recorded a double-double with 18 kills and 15 digs while Moncavo recorded 15 kills and a season-high six blocks. 

The Golden Eagles scored four of the first six points as McKenzie Earl (Rawlins, Wyo.) gave the Golden Eagles a 4-2 lead in the third set. Casper went on a run to take an 8-6 lead before Rigan McInerney (Gillette, Wyo.) recorded a kill to cut the deficit to 8-7. Casper pulled away from the Golden Eagles, winning the set 25-17.

Kiley Still (Cheyenne, Wyo.) had 23 assists and 11 digs while recording three kills. Shelby Veenstra (Twin Falls, Idaho) tallied 19 assists. 

LCCC came out in the fourth set and took a 4-1 lead on a De Stefano kill, forcing a Casper timeout. Following the timeout, the Thunderbirds scored six of the next eight points to take a 7-6 lead. The Golden Eagles opened up an 18-16 lead on a Moncavo kill before a Veenstra and Moncavo block pushed the lead to 19-16. 

The Golden Eagles will wrap up the regular season on Friday as they head to Torrington to take on Eastern Wyoming at 7:00 pm.
